TV Commercials

Next class, and it will be our last seminar together ;) We will be focusing on TV commercials and a presentation on Internet ads will be presented. Before that, take a moment to view these commercial ads from YouTube. They are funny but often times, commercials and print ads are connected. Enjoy.

Advertising Images

Welcome back and a Happy New Years!

Today, we watched a video by Jean Kilboune Killing Us Softly 3 which she talked about the Advertising Images of Women. Ms. Kilbourne showed us certain images that some students could relate to and some students didn't notice such images of passivity or images of women being dominated (or at least the ads they are normally accustomed to). I found it quite interesting about the differences between German ads and North American ads, like mentioned by one of the student.

All in all, it was a good start for the New Year and a good discussion although the classroom today was the least occupied class of all classes.

Since, I promised I would put up a link for those who are interested in getting to know the more 'inside' understanding of North American advertising and to an extent culture, here is the link. Like mentioned, it is divided up into 6 parts, so you are not required to watch the whole video.

I would encourage you to comment on the video here on the blog. What did you find appalling, surprising, not so surprising and say shocking?

The video is titled The Merchants of Cool and it is about 53 minutes in length.
